Dr David Wilbirt, long implicated in steroid prescriptions to WWE wrestlers, came to justice yesterday. (AI.com)
A doctor from Arizona and his fiancée pleaded guilty Friday to federal steroids charges in Mobile, bringing to six the number of people who have admitted guilt in a long-running probe into performance enhancing drugs.
Dr. David A. Wilbirt, whose name has been tied to a professional wrestler who died following steroid use, pleaded guilty to money laundering and conspiracy to illegally dispense and distribute anabolic steroids. He also pleaded guilty in Mobile to a federal steroids charge that had been filed in Houston.
His fiancée, Candace V. Toler, pleaded guilty to a steroids conspiracy charge, as well.
Wilbirt supplied steroids and other drugs to WWE wrestlers, some of whom subsequently died. That's not good.
Today however S.I. really rocked the wrestling world. According to S.I., Arizona Doctor David Wilbirt was billed for HCG and the steroid stanozolol that were sent to WWE star Eddie Guerrero in early 2005. (Guerrero died in 2005, in a Minneapolis hotel room due to what a coroner later ruled as heart disease, complicated by an enlarged heart resulting from a history of anabolic steroid use.)
According to the report, Wilbirt also issued prescriptions for the steroids to Oscar Gutierrez (Rey Mysterio). SI.com has listed 11 professional wrestlers in total ranging from low level rookies, washed up and retired wrestlers to top level stars. Two such wrestlers, Adam Copeland (Edge) and Shane Helms (The Hurricane) received HGH via the doctor.
In a six-month period alone, from November 2004 to April 2005, Wilbirt wrote 3,879 prescriptions for controlled substances — more than any other physician in the state, according to a DEA search warrant affidavit.
And investigators believe none of these prescriptions came during legitimate doctor-patient relationships. The prescriptions were instead issued to people he’d never met or examined who requested the drugs through what police call "rogue" Internet pharmacies, the warrant states.
That guy perpetrated significant fraud on the Internet. 4000 scripts!
Watching a wrestling match surely is a good part of an enjoyable vacation.
