A Ukrainian weightlifter used way too much nandrolone before his lift; reports say he tested sky high for the anabolic steroid. The results were not all that great: he finished 6th in his weight class.
Ukrainian weightlifter Igor Razoronov has been kicked out of the Beijing Olympics, after becoming the sixth athlete caught for doping during the games.
Razoronov tested positive for the steroid nandrolone after finishing sixth in the 105kg division on Monday, the International Olympic Committee said. The 38-year-old Razoronov was disqualified and expelled from the games.
The IOC asked the international weightlifting federation to adjust the competition results and consider any further sanctions. Razoronov now faces a two-year ban from the sport.
Razoronov can share a plane with Lyudmila Blonska, the Ukrainian heptathlete who was nailed using methyl-testosterone.
The IOC said Razoronov's doping sample was more than four times over the permitted threshold for nandrolone. He did not request testing of his backup "B" sample.
The IOC said Ukrainian team officials "apologized," saying Razoronov had undergone surgery for elbow and knee injuries and that his positive test may have resulted from medication he was using.
IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch, however, said it was unlikely medical treatment would lead to the presence of nandrolone and that Razoronov had not requested any exemption for use of medications.
Razoronov is the only weightlifter who has tested positive in Beijing. Eleven Greek weightlifters and 12 Bulgarian lifters failed doping tests ahead of the Beijing Games.
Interestingly the Razor won a silver medal in Athens 2004 when a Hungarian lifter tested positive for oxandrolone. (Sportigo)
“Hungarian weightlifting silver medalist Ferenc Gyurkovics and Puerto Rican wrestler Mabel Fonseca were expelled from the games today after testing positive for steroids, the International Olympic Committee said. Gyurkovics, 24, tested positive for oxandrolone, the IOC said. He competed in the 105kg class and set an Olympic record by lifting 195kg in the snatch on Tuesday, but finished second to Dmitri Berestov of Russia in the overall totals. Gyurkovics was stripped of his medal by the IOC executive board. Ukraine’s Igor Razoronov will now get the silver, with Russia’s Gleb Pisarevskiy moving up to bronze. Fonseca, 32, tested positive for the steroid stanozolol
At least the Razor is above 16 years of age...
