Power to the people: Indian weightlifter Monika Devi cleared of doping; flying to Beijing as we speak, oops change of course

She must be exhausted clearing security at O'Hare Airport, but Monika Devi, who only days ago was suspended for doping (steroids), will be jetting off to Beijing to jerk up some weights.  Appears she has been cleared of the doping charges.  (Breaking News Online)  However the Indian Olympic Committee says it's too late for Monika.  Update: The IOC also says too late.

The Big Breaking News! Weightlifter Monika Devi, who was pulled out of Beijing Olympics after allegedly tested positive in a dope test conducted by the SAI, has been given a clean chit by Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Monika will fly out to Beijing tonight to participate in Beijing Olympics 2008. Monika is India's lone weightlifter at Beijing Olympics.

IOA's clearance of Monika Devi of all dope charges brought huge relief to millions of sports lovers in the country. Monika's stand has been vindicated that she never took any drugs and it was a conspiracy against her to promote another weightlifter Shailja Pujara in his place. A proper inquiry will expose the guilty. It's really great that Monika Devi will finally represent India at Beijing Olympics.

Devi's suspension prompted a huge revolt in India.  Revolutionaries took the streets, threatened boycotts, and motivated violence in Minipur (seriously).   Devi also said that if she doped, just shoot her.  All that is obviated now -- save the bullets -- as she flies off to China.

Police burst tear gas shells to disperse hundreds of sportpersons protesting in Imphal against the dropping of weightlifter Monica Devi from the Indian Olympics team.

Official sources said hundreds of sportpersons who earlier launched a sit-in at Khunman Lampak sports complex later took out a rally towards Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh's official residence to protest against dropping of Monica.

As the protestors turned violent at Sanjenthong area near Singh's residence, police burst tear gas shells, sources said, adding that one person was injured.

The rally was organised by Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) and Manipur Weightlifting Association (MWA).
