1. Reports say Romanian female middle-long distance runners Elena Antoci and Cristina Vasiloiu (left) go down to doping suspensions as we noted earlier. The substance found in the tests, revealed now was EPO. (IHT) (Our story on Vasiloiu here)
Middle-distance runners Elena Antoci and Cristina Vasiloiu (left) tested positive for the blood booster EPO and could be dropped from the Romanian Olympic team, an official said Thursday.
Octavian Morariu, the head of the Romanian Olympic Committee, said that an initial test from a laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland, showed a presence of EPO in the athletes' blood. He said he was waiting for the results of a second test from the laboratory to confirm the results.
Vasiloiu finished 9th at the Worlds in 2007 (4:15.43). Antoci won the Euro indoor 1500M in 2005, however she also is an elite contender at 800M and 3000M too. She ran in the Sydney Olympics.
2. More incredible is the horrendous Russian suspension of 7 elite athletes, headlined by Yelena Soboleva the 1500M world record holder, as well as 2 time world champion Tatyana Tomashova. Astonishing. To MonstersandCritics: (New York Times here)
The IAAF confirmed Thursday that it has provisionally suspended seven Russian athletes for tampering with doping samples.
'The athletes have been charged under IAAF Rules 32.2 (b) and 32.2 (e) for a fraudulent substitution of urine which is both a prohibited method and also a form of tampering with the doping control process,' the governing body for track and field athletics said in a statement.
'These rule violations were established following the deliberate storage of samples by the IAAF and re-analysis using comparative DNA techniques, and were the result of a specific investigation which was instigated and carried out by the IAAF for more than a year.'
The athletes suspended were Yelena Soboleva, who earlier this year set a world indoor record in the women's 1,500 metres, two-time world 1,500 champion Tatyana Tomashova, middle-distance runners Yulia Fomenko, Svetlana Cherkasova and Olga Yegorova, hammer thrower Gulfiya Khanafeyeva and discus thrower Darya Pishchalnikova.
Soboleva is a heavyweight runner and current world record holder in the 1500M (photo, above left). Tomashova (above right) also is an ultra-elite 1500M runner. Fomenko was 3rd in the 1500M at the Worlds this spring with a 3:59.41. Cherkasova, an Olympian too, is a sub 2.00 800 runner (to the immediate right). Olga Yegorova -- another Olympian --won world championships in the 3000M and the 5000M.
Gulfiya
Khanafeyeva (left) held the world record in the hammer at one point. Pishchalnikova has finished first in Europe and 2nd in the world at discus.
Someone should simply hoe out all the world records and event medals set and won by dopers and juicers...to see if any are actually left on the books. It is astounding that track officials and track fans tolerate this massive drug-cheating. Draconian measures seem to be indicated to banish the drug-cheats.
How did the athletes cheat (NYT)?
“The IAAF suspects the athletes of replacing the doping samples, and decided to disqualify them from participation in all competitions under its auspices,” All-Russian Athletics Federation president Valentin Balakhnichev told the Russian daily Sport-Express. “This means that all they will not participate in the Games in Beijing. The fact that there is a problem, we had learned in advance.”
We dare anyone to spell check this post.
