Romanian middle distance runner Cristina Vasiloiu brust into the track scene last year when she won the 1500. Using EPO must realy give a runner a huge kick. Wonder how the defeated athletes feel now that Vasiloiu is revealed as a drug-cheat?
We go to that story:
Cristina Vasiloiu uncorked a phenomenal final 400m to become the first Romanian winner of the event for 22 years, crossing the line in 4:15.30.
Vasiloiu, the fastest European junior this year with 4:07.81, was 10 metres adrift of Britain's Stephanie Twell at the bell, the SPAR European Cross Country Championships junior champion having made a long run for home with 700m to go, but overtook her 60 metres from the line.
"I was feeling good throughout the race, the pace was not so fast that I had any problems, and even when the British girl made her move, I was confident I have the speed to overtake her in the final part of the race. I was very confident of the gold medal. There was only my team mate Daniela (Donisa) who I had any worries about," said Vasiloiu, who was inspired by the exploits of Gabriela Szabo when she was younger.
Twell took the silver medal in 16.03 while Donisa made it two Romanians on the podium when she came through to finish third in 4:18.19.
"I didn't want to get involved in the fighting at the beginning so I went straight to the back. When I realised it was slow, I notched it up a little gear with 900m to go then with 700m to go I let them know I wasn't coming back. Unfortunately I got lactic (acid) in the last 100m. It was a big learning curve," said Twell.
Uncorked is right...uncorked a vial of EPO to gain some oxygen delivery advantage over the competition. And an athlete can be very confident with all that extra EPO.
It's only an advantage if other competitors aren't doing it. You're assuming the "defeated athletes" are clean. It could be that Vasiloiu had a better pharmacist, or it could be that she was really better, or it could be that other runners were clean. That's the problem with pervasive doping--there's no way to know.

You are exactly right. What a problem? We take two stances on this:
1. The 'see no evil stance'. No other runners tested positive, or have been implicated in a 'nonanalytic positive'. Thus we assume the other runners were clean.
2. The 'guilt by association' stance. To be able to achieve at this level all athletes must be doping and therefore either her chemist was better, (or in the nuclear arms race of doping) she won when everyone's dope stockpile canceled each other out.
This is a variant on the prisoner's dilemma...everyone would be better if no one doped, however if one person dopes, then everyone must dope.

which are another example of what some people call the "lexicalist hypothesis", a view that has occasionally -- but erroneously -- been inferred from some previous writings of mine. Since my linguistic creativity is infinite, I can categorically state that there aren't templates of any sort.
