Giant slugger Barry Bonds hit career home run #755 off San Diego starter Clay Hensley tonight. Bonds powered a Hensley ball into the opposite left field stands.
Hensley himself tested positive for anabolic steroids while in the minor leagues. (SignOnSanDiego.com)
The four Padres farmhands were among 38 minor league players identified as being violators of Major League Baseball's Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
All were suspended for 15 games for using performance-enhancing substances – either steroids or steroid precursors.
"To me, that's not very smart when you know you are going to be tested," General Manager Kevin Towers said. "It's good the names are out there. Public disclosures are going to be beneficial. I hope it embarrasses the heck out of them."...
The best known of the four is Hensley, a 25-year-old right-handed pitcher acquired from San Francisco in 2003 for reliever Matt Herges.
A strong showing this spring earned Hensley a spot in the rotation at Triple-A Portland. He was 11-10 with a 4.30 ERA with Double-A Mobile last season, coming on strong after a slow start threatened his career.
Bonds, himself appeared relieved when he finally connected for the historic home run. Wonder if San Diego
radio broadcaster Ted Leitner had to cast aside his disgust to make a call?
Any comments here about Bonds' PED use? Naw, not now. The event is what it is: Bonds ties Hank Aaron for the career home run mark. Period.
The Giant celebration and th e Giant bench appeared subdued. Wonder what these players think in their private moments of the Bonds achievement?
