The Louisville Courier caught up with former MLB and Cub pitcher Fergie Jenkins. The inevitable steroid and Barry Bonds questions came up. Sounds like Jenkins supports Bonds as this point, however reserves judgment on the record when this mess is all sorted out.
Jenkins, who visited Louisville Slugger Field on Friday, said baseball's powers-that-be eventually will find out to what extent players took steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs. In the meantime, he supports Bonds' march to break Henry Aaron's career home run record of 755. Bonds took 745 into last night's game.
"They have never proven that he's taken anything," Jenkins said. "A lot of it is hearsay. A lot of stories have been written, and they might be right -- who knows -- but until he's proven guilty, you've got to say he's doing a great job."
Jenkins went through his own brush with illegal drugs at the Canadian-USA border in 1980, however charges were dismissed. Perhaps the suspicions about Bond's PED use will someday be dismissed too. Don't bet the farm on that one,though...
