Asafa Powell returned from injuries this week to run the fastest 100M in the world this year -- 9.97. The Houston Chronicle carries that story (along with the AP).
BELGRADE, SERBIA — World-record holder Asafa Powell won the 100 meters Tuesday with the fastest sprint in the world this year.
Powell led from start to finish to clock 9.97 seconds in his season-opening return from a bout with knee tendinitis at the Artur Takac Memorial meet.
Last year Powell (on the left above; Justin Gatlin to the right) co-held the world record with Justin Gatlin at 9.77 briefly last year. Gatlin's time is suspect, as he is slated to appear before the USADA in hearings this summer to address his anabolic use and positive test for a steroid.
Powell laid into drug cheats following the race. Powell quotes from SportingLife.com:
And 100 metres world-record holder Powell, who has always strongly condemned drug cheats, said: "I think a lot of athletes are using science to beat the drug test."
Asked he if agreed with Chambers' belief that an athlete using drugs was more likely to win at the Olympics or other major championships, said: "Yes, I agree with that 100%.
