Gwen Knapp in the SF Chronicle profiles Barry Bond's trainer Greg Anderson's stay in federal prison. Anderson stands convicted of steroids conspiracy; he sits in prison because he will not testify against Bonds to the Grand Jury.
Anderson appears to be a celebrity. Apparently anyone with a connection to the home run king rules:
"Totally respected," Wolf said, describing the other inmates' impression of Anderson as if he were delivering a baseball scouting report. "He is in there for refusing to talk about someone that most of these guys would consider one of their heroes. ... Everyone would show up and say, 'Oh, Greg's here. I want to meet that guy.' A lot of them talked about asking for his autograph."
Was there any evidence Anderson is keeping mum because Bonds will make it worth his time?
Most people assume that Anderson has made a lucrative trade-off for his hardship, expecting Bonds to reward his silence. Wolf won't pretend to know what has been said or implied between the two, but he said Anderson didn't act like the carefree beneficiary of a multimillionaire.
"He doesn't have much money in there to speak of," Wolf said, "and he (frequently) wonders how he's going to recover ... financially."
