The AP is reporting good news on the high school front: the fall steroid testing program in New Jersey high schools found no positive tests.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ New Jersey's first in-the-nation tests of high school athletes for steroid abuse showed no positive results among 150 random samples taken in the fall, according to the group that administered the tests.
All tournament-bound high schoolers randomly sampled tested negative for performance-enhancing drugs, according to Bob Baly, assistant director with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The New Jersey athletic association sponsored the first state-wide steroid testing plan in the country for high school athletes. Five hundred high school sports participants underwent testing at a cost of $100,000.
Many high schools report that in the past testing was generally negative as well as expensive. Nonetheless, several states are pushing plans for structured high school steroid tests.
