Former Atlanta slugger Dale Murphy appears concerned about the use of anabolic substances in sports. The long ball hitter is swinging big again, in starting the 'I Won't Cheat' foundation.
That's a blunt title, but the Nation doesn't remember Murphy as a finesse hitter. He stepped up to kill the ball. From Murphy's website:
OUR MISSION ‘To Leave the Game Better Than We Found It.”
Former National League Baseball MVP Dale Murphy launched this foundation to help the world of sports overcome the illegal performance enhancing drug problem. An unintended consequence of drug abuse (steroids, human growth hormone, methamphetamines, etc…) at the professional levels has been the dramatic increase in illegal substance abuse among our youth athletes. Too many of these young people now feel that they must put their bodies and minds in danger if they want to compete at the highest levels.
Nice features on the page, like this Q and A with Harrison Pope.
Good luck to Murph on his new project.
Note: with some thought, and reading the question below, I wonder this: why is Murphy so concerned about steroid use? Most of the former players move on and let bygones be bygones. Could Murphy feel cheated? Could he feel that his numbers were not steroid-enhanced, and now look pedestrian?
Murphy may or may not be a HOFer, but certainly his numbers don't look as great as they once did compared to the inflated numbers of the steroid era.
