Remember when Dan Gable won 17 NCAA national wrestling titles? Well he is back this year, feisty as ever. The new assistant coach with Iowa wrestling almost got into a fight when Iowa wrestled Iowa State Sunday night. Seems Iowa head coach Tom Brands, and Olympic Gold-Medalist Gable were ready to take on Olympic Gold-Winner, NCAA legend, and Iowa State Coach Cael Sanderson with ISU assistant Tim Hartung. Then Gable flipped someone the bird, or 'the arm'. From the Iowa City Press-Citizen:
"The 165-pound match stirred up a lot of action just because of the way it went -- being behind, coming back, tying it up, going into overtime, questioning the calls and then the other coaches coming out backing up their side," Gable said. "It got a little bit heated."
By the end of the match, Brands and Gable were jawing in the center of the mat with Sanderson and Cyclone assistant Tim Hartung, who spent the past two seasons on Zalesky's staff.
"It's just friendly conversation," Sanderson said with a smile. "We were asking them where they were going to have their dinner after the meet, those types of things."
By the end of the night, Gable and Sanderson were debating the semantics of the sign language used after the first match.
"Gable was flipping us the bird from across the mat," Sanderson said. "That's pretty good."
Gable said he didn't "flip him the bird; I flipped him the arm."
"The bird, I know what that means," Gable said. "I don't know what (the arm) means. To me, it meant, 'Come on, guys.' He had just called me a crybaby right before that or something. Sometimes you get a little emotional, but that's part of the game. That's probably why he won the Olympic gold and it's maybe why I won one, too."
(more after the jump)
The Des Moines Register had a story too, on the match, here and here.
ISU Coach Cale Sanderson's quote was cleverly demeaning:
"All I can say is I'm glad I had the opportunity to wrestle and coach under (former Iowa State) coach (Bobby) Douglas," Sanderson said, "and learn that integrity and the ethics and the morals that are more important than winning and losing, no question about that."
From Pat Hardy at the IC Press-Citizen:
An already raucous crowd got more excited when Brands and Iowa assistant coach Dan Gable had a heated exchange with Iowa State coach Cael Sanderson and Cyclone assistant Tim Hartung near the center of the mat.
Sanderson and Hartung apparently were upset that Perry took an injury timeout at the end of regulation. They were screaming for an explanation, which caused Brands and Gable to launch their own verbal assault.
It was a moment frozen in wrestling history: three former Olympic gold medalists refusing to back down.
Iowa Coach Tom Brands likened the confrontation to a dog fight:
Iowa coach Tom Brands declined comment Monday. After Sunday's meet, Brands said he and his assistants were doing what any staff would do.
"We're going to stick up for our guys," Brands said. "They're out yapping, we're going to be yapping, too."
