Giants catcher Eliezer Alfonso draws 50 game suspension for ?Winstrol

Here from "Still Orange and Black" comes verification that San Francisco Giants catcher Eliezer Alfonso will sit out 50 games for impersonating Barry Bonds violating MLB's 'performance-enhancing' policy.  A source says the substance was Winstrol, Ben Johnson's steroid of choice.  (great story on Latino players and juicing here; mentions both Winstrol and Alfonzo quote)

340x Giants catcher Eliezer Alfonzo - currently with Triple-A Fresno - has received a 50 game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's performance-enhancing drug policy.

Alfonso played in the minors for ten years, before hitting the majors with the Giants in 2006. He showed serious promise, taking over after Mike Matheny went down. He hit Spring Training this year ready to take the backup catcher spot, after being named MVP of the Venezuelan winter league. He struggled and began the season in Triple-A.

Alfonzo issued a statement (SF Chronicle)

"I made a mistake and I want to apologize to my family, my teammates, the fans and the Giants organization. I know what I did was wrong and now I will pay the penalty," Alfonzo said. "As a father, I now have to look my children in the eye and explain to them that I have made a big mistake, one unfortunately that they are also going to have to deal with as well as me.

"This will not happen again. I will serve my penalty and look forward to getting back on the field."

The Giants released a worthless statement too: (Giants statement):

The Giants were disappointed to learn that one of our players, Eliezer Alfonzo, has failed a test for a performance enhancing drug. Our organization fully supports Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

As an organization, we will continue to work with our players, Major League Baseball and the Players Association to do what we can do to eliminate these performance enhancing substances from our game.

We will continue to support and counsel Eliezer during his suspension.

Forgive the cynicism that for years the Giants hid their management head in the sand as Bonds juiced.  The system worked.
