Someone needs to start the "Bonds Blog". The slugger generated more news in one day than entire countries generate in one week.
This PM's news says that the Oakland As pursued ex-Giant slugger Barry Bonds until the home run king became the target of federal indictments. From the San Francisco Chronicle:
...an increasingly fascinating subplot for the A's - their recently interrupted pursuit of free agent Barry Bonds. According to industry sources, before Bonds was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice this month, talks between the A's and Bonds were further along than anyone has let on.
Since Bonds' indictment, no one with the team has flat-out rejected the notion of signing him. Last week, A's owner Lew Wolff said, "I doubt we'd have interest at this point," but he added that the question would be better put to general manager Billy Beane, who was then traveling in Europe.
This week, Beane declined to answer questions about Bonds, citing his policy of not discussing free agents. Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, also declined comment when reached on Thursday.
Signing a player under federal indictment might push even the most enthusiastic baseball fan to apoplexy. Or maybe not. Is Darryl Strawberry available?
There seem to be 4 elements to sports stories these days:
- On field action
- Contracts
- Steroids and doping
- Legal actions
Thus story fulfills all the above elements.
