Steroid Nation flew out to Southern California to witness one of the last 2007 games of MLB career home run leader Barry Bonds. Bonds singled sharply in the 2nd inning, however the anemic Giants could not move him past second base.
In the following inning a long fly by Adrian Gonzalez drove Bonds up against the left field wall. Bonds showed at least a 12 inch vertical as he smashed into the wall. Fan interference made have prevented the Giant left fielder from making (at his age) a spectacular catch.
Apparently the wind knocked out of him, Bonds retrieved the ball to limit Gonzalez to a triple, then collapsed on the ground. He seemed to sit stunned for a couple minutes. He finished off the inning, however the Giants pulled the slugger from the lineup.
We wondered if we saw the end of the year for Bonds, perhaps the last game of his career considering the injury.
Turns out Bonds suffered a vicious toe injury that may cost him a week.
Giants left fielder Barry Bonds could be sidelined for up to a week with his sprained right big toe, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday, revising an original estimate.
After Bonds hurt himself while pursuing Adrian Gonzalez's long drive in Saturday night's second inning, Bochy said that Bonds might be shelved for two or three days. But Bochy reported that the swelling around Bonds' toe increased "quite a bit" overnight, requiring a more prolonged rest...
Bonds, 43, landed awkwardly after leaping at the wall for Gonzalez's hit, which resulted in a triple. Television replays indicated that a fan with a fielder's glove might have deflected the ball away from Bonds or knocked it out of his glove. Giants right-hander Matt Cain said that Bonds told him he had the ball in his grasp but had it jarred from him.
San Diego fans...not only tried to disable the greatest slugger in MLB history, but went on to flog the Giants with a 6-0 shutout...
Sigh. Once again Barry Bonds defies the laws of nature.
