Kenny Patterson, for tOSU and current Denver Bronco DE received a 4 game suspension from the NFL for violating the steroid policy. Bronco coach Mike Shanahan goes to the 'supplement excuse' for Peterson. From the Colorado Springs Gazette:
Denver Broncos defensive lineman Kenny Peterson told coach Mike Shanahan he was suspended for violating the NFL’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances because he took a nutritional supplement with a banned substance in it, Shanahn said Monday.
Peterson, a reserve lineman, was suspended four games for the violation. He was at Monday's mini-camp practice but declined an interview request. Peterson can participate in offseason practices and training camp before his suspension starts before the first game of the season.
“Sometimes it’s not a conscious mistake,” Shanahan said. “Sometimes you take the wrong supplement and all of a sudden a guy might not know he’s making a mistake and he makes one. It just takes one slip up.”
Many players have said after being suspended that they unknowingly ingested a banned substance, such as ephedra, while taking an over-the-counter supplement. The NFL doesn’t reduce the punishments if a player unknowingly takes a tainted supplement.
“You pay the price,” Shanahan said. “You’re responsible for what goes into your body. That’s the bottom line.”
As there have been supposed cases of contaminated supplements containing banned substances, anyone caught juicing will no go with that defense. Considering the marginal effect (waste of money) supplements give an athlete, and considering the low probability of a supplement containing a banned substance that might affect a test, this is a nice out for a drug-cheat.
Look at NFL players, then look at supplements. Anyone with steroid knowledge and some logic knows what the game is here.
