Don Catlin, the preeminent expert in laboratory drug testing, is moving out of that endeavor to concentrate on research, the Washington Post reports today. The Nation puts up some interesting posts, some amusing posts, but perhaps no more important post that this information. Dr Catlin is a world class expert in detecting sports doping. If he concentrates his efforts on research, odds are that some interesting innovative methods could be developed. Stay tuned.
Don Catlin, widely considered the most respected chemist in the anti-doping community, has decided to leave the world of drug testing after more than 25 years to pursue research, he said today.
In a field in which testers have struggled to keep up with the innovations of cheaters, Catlin, 68, has been credited with nearly a dozen major testing discoveries and busts during the past decade, making him the most feared scientist among athletes who cheat with performance-enhancing drugs
Catlin was involved in:
- The BALCO investigation where he discovered the previously unknown steroid THG
- Devising a test for darbepoitin
- Developing the carbon-isotope ratio (CIR) test
Catlin's decision to leave the testing world comes a week after USADA CEO Terry Madden stepped down from his post, but the departures were not related.

This seems easy enough but if done wrong, it can lower the level of professionalism especially since the pressure of face-to-face interview is off.
