Former world champion kayaker Nathan Baggaley's orange juice defense was 'Pulp Fiction'
Sounds like the 'orange juice' defense, former world kayak champion Nathan Baggaley floated to the Court of Arbitration for sport, sank like a leaky kayak.
Baggaley tested positive for Ben Johnson's favorite 'roid stanozolol (winnie) and methandienone. He said he had been swigging his brother's OJ from the family fridge. Bro was trying to rehab from a football injury and thus using winnie and MAD.
Winnie can be oral as well as injected. Winnie on the street is a 'cutting drug'.
Methandienone appears to be a Dianabol-like oral compound called Danabol. Seems to be Russian developed, but we are still tracking it down.
The Court did not buy the OJ story as "extenuating circumstances".
Story here at the Sydney Morning Herald.
FORMER world champion kayaker Nathan Baggaley has had his drug ban extended to two years and has been prevented from competing in today's Summer Surf Series at North Burleigh.
Baggaley was banned for 15 months from all sport by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after testing positive to two steroids, stanozolol and methandienone, in October 2005 and was planning to compete in today's surf ski race as his featured comeback event. But Baggaley's ban has been extended to October 2007 following a ruling in the CAS this week, further disrupting his preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The International Canoe Federation (ICF) decided last March that it would impose the mandatory two-year steroid ban, as provided under the World Anti-Doping Code, and deemed that Baggaley was not eligible for competition until later this year. They did not believe that Baggaley's excuse of swigging drug-laden orange juice which belonged to his brother (who was taking the drugs to recover from a football injury) and taken from their household fridge was "extenuating circumstances"
under the code.
The court was critical of the way the positive was handled. Baggaley, a former world champ at Kayak, would probably like to compete at the Olympics. This is going to make that dream, difficult. However, he is still thinking...
It is understood Baggaley and his lawyer have been back to CAS to try to have the ICF decision limited to canoeing, which would allow him to compete in surf lifesaving competitions. CAS has reserved its decision on that until next week.
