The Andra Pradesh Badminton Association has asked shuttler JBS Vidhyadar for an explanation after he accused a teammate of doping.
Vidhyadhar had alleged that Guru Saidutt took performance-enhancement drugs during a tournament in Indore in December and insisted that he be tested.
"It is a committee which decides who is to be tested. It is never done on the basis of a request from a player who lost and then said the other player won because of doping," said Pullela Gopichand, national coach.
Vidhyadhar, who lost to Saidutt in the quarter-finals at Indore, said he did not mean to tarnish Saidutt's reputation. He said he only got suspicious when the 16-year-old managed to play as many as 12 matches on the trot within 24 hours.
"We respect the BAI (Badminton Association of India). According to the rules, I gave the protest letter and after that, I never went to the press. But I do not know how it was blown out of proportion," said Vidhyadhar, Badminton player.
Former national coach SM Arif said rumours about doping have always been there, but were never proven.
"Some suspects were there that some players are taking. But nothing was ever proved. There has never been any such thing in Indian badminton," said Arif.
Despite the dust kicked up, Saidutt was not ultimately tested because there was no testing facility in Indore. The badminton federation, not keen to wash dirty linen in public, reportedly forced Vidhyadhar to withdraw his complaint.
