German doctor under suspicion in Spanish cycling doping
From a Canadian sourcefound here. The cycling doping scandal going on in Europe is widening. This situation has thus far has involved Dr Eufemiano Fuentes, a Spanish physician, and possibly Jan Ullrich, past TdF winner.
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Prosecutors opened a criminal investigation of a German doctor suspected of supplying performance-enhancing drugs to a Spanish sports physician at the centre of a major doping scandal.
Federal agents and local prosecutors searched the residence and the office of a German doctor and seized "comprehensive evidence," a statement from the Federal Crime Office, the German equivalent of the FBI, said Thursday. The doctor, who was not identified, is suspected of supplying drugs for the "purpose of doping in sports."
Thursday's simultaneous raids in the states of Lower Saxony and Thuringia were the result of investigations in Germany and Spain against Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, the statement said....
More than two weeks ago, Spain's Civil Guard said it was investigating whether a German doctor working at a hospital in a small German town provided drugs to Fuentes.
Five people in Spain - including Fuentes and another doctor, Jose Merino Batres - were arrested and charged in May when police seized drugs and frozen blood at a Madrid clinic. The samples were thought to have been prepared for performance-enhancing transfusions...
A Civil Guard police report on the investigation cited more than 50 cyclists. Nine riders, including Jan Ullrich, Ivan Basso and Francisco Mancebo, were forced to withdraw before the start of the Tour de France.
